Visual and Mass Communication
Visual Communication
- Visual communication is storytelling; it's how we communicate information and create experiences across a range of visual mediums. It can be found within design, illustration, photography, art and advertising; it could be an image, a quote, a campaign, a film or an animation.
Graphics Design
- Graphic design is the creation of visual communication using typography, photography, color and illustration. It is used to convey ideas or messages to an audience, with the aim of achieving a specific response or outcome.
Illustration
- An illustration is also a form of visual communication. In terms of graphic design, it is this visual representation which provides definition, emphasis or a visual accent to a given text. The piece of writing and the illustration work together to offer meaning or comprehension of an idea.
Photography
- From the second that the camera is clicked and a moment is captured, a record has been given birth to the world. Photography is a form of visual communication; it communicates to viewers without voice but with messages.
Typography
- Typography it explicitly refers to the practice of arranging letters and words in a way that improves a copy’s readability, clarity, and visual appeal. Inherently, it also comprises font style, appearance, and structure for evoking specific emotions in order to convey particular messages.
User Interface (UI) Design
- In the dynamic world of UI design, where interfaces are gateways to digital experiences, mastering the art of visual communication is non-negotiable. Visual communication is more than just arranging pixels on a screen; it’s about understanding how specific design elements evoke emotions, guide users, and create an engaging journey.
Mass Communication
- Mass communication involves the dissemination of information to large audiences through various media channels. It focuses on reaching and influencing a wide audience with messages that can be educational, informative, or persuasive.
Journalism
- Journalism and mass communication are two interrelated and overlapping fields of study and practice that deal with producing and disseminating information and messages to a large and diverse audience. Journalism and mass communication significantly impact the society, culture, politics, and economy of the world.
Broadcasting
- Broadcasting is the distribution of content, either audio or video, to a large dispersed audience by means of any medium of electronic mass communications. Typically, the mass communications medium is one that uses the electromagnetic spectrum, i.e. radio waves, in a one-to-many model.
Public Relations (PR)
- Public Relations is a strategic way of maintaining and promoting a company's/organization's image in the public eye. Public Relations also focuses on strategic writing to help promote a brand by writing press/news releases, newsletters, speech writing, and more! Advertising and Public Relations is designed for ECU students interested in representing businesses, individuals, and nonprofit organizations in the public sphere. It focuses on developing strong communication and critical thinking skills while, also, providing a deeper understanding of the advertising and public relations process.
Digital Media
- In mass communication, digital media is any communication media that operates in conjunction with various encoded machine-readable data formats. Digital content can be created, viewed, distributed, modified, listened to, and preserved on a digital electronic device, including digital data storage media (in contrast to analog electronic media) and digital broadcasting.
Design Principles
- The 8 basic principles of communication are clarity, timeliness, coherence, urgency, conciseness, correctness, courteousness, and completeness. Similar to Cialdini's principles of persuasion, the eight principles of communication are the driving force behind messaging that resonates and persuades.
